Sophie Turner says Taylor Swift provided ‘home and safe space’ after Joe Jonas split: ‘I didn’t know if I was going to make it’
Sophie Turner is finally opening up about her split from Joe Jonas.
The “Game of Thrones” alum, 28, told British Vogue how she struggled with the intense media frenzy over her marriage after Jonas, 34, filed for divorce in September 2023.
“I mean, those were the worst few days of my life,” Turner, who shares daughters Willa, 3, and Delphine, 1, with Jonas, said in the interview published Wednesday.
She continued, “There were some days that I didn’t know if I was going to make it. I would call my lawyer saying, ‘I can’t do this. I just can’t.’ I was just never strong enough to stand up for myself. And then, finally, after two weeks of me being in a rut, she reminded me that it was my children I was fighting for. Once anyone says to me, ‘Do it for your kids,’ I’m doing it. I wouldn’t do it for myself, but I’ll find the strength for them.”
Turner gave credit to Jonas’ ex Taylor Swift for helping her get through the aftermath of the breakup. The pair hung out publicly as Turner was dealing with the dissolution of her marriage.
“Taylor was an absolute hero to me this year. I’ve never been more grateful to anyone than I am for her because she took my children and me, and provided us with a home and a safe space,” Turner said. “She really has a heart of gold.”
Page Six reported that Swift loaned her Tribeca pad in New York City at the time of the nasty split. Turner even accompanied the musician to a Kansas City Chiefs-New York Jets game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, that October.
The actress described how she was filming the British TV series “Joan” in Europe when online articles came out putting her in a bad light after the split. Jonas, meanwhile, was coming off well in the media stories.
“I remember I was on set, I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn’t leave,” she said. “My kids were in the States, and I couldn’t get to them because I had to finish ‘Joan.’ And all these articles started coming out…”
Turner added: “It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother — mum guilt is so real! I just kept having to say to myself, ‘None of this is true. You are a good mum, and you’ve never been a partier.’ “
The mom of two couldn’t say much about her ongoing divorce for legal reasons — but she did criticize the way she was portrayed as a “wayward mother” in the media after their split.
“I mean, it’s unfathomable the amount of people that will just make s – – t up and put it up based on a picture,” Turner said. “A picture might tell a thousand words, but it’s not my story. It felt like I was watching a movie of my life that I hadn’t written, hadn’t produced, or starred in. It was shocking. I’m still in shock.”
She also didn’t enjoy how she was portrayed alongside Priyanka Chopra and Danielle Jonas, who are married to Nick and Kevin Jonas, respectively.
“There was a lot of attention on the three brothers, and the wives. Well, we were always called ‘the wives,’ and I hated that,” she said. “It was kind of this plus-one feeling. And that’s nothing to do with him — in no way did he make me feel that — it was just that the perception of us was as the groupies in the band.”
The estranged couple’s nasty divorce played out in public after Jonas filed for divorce Sept. 5. They put out a joint statement on Instagram where they announced they had “mutually decided to amicably end our marriage.”
But Turner later alleged she was blindsided by the decision.
The “X-Men” actress filed a lawsuit against Jonas, accusing him of refusing to hand over their daughters’ passports to let the girls return to their “forever home” in England.
Turner claimed that the end of her marriage happened “very suddenly” after the former couple had an argument on Aug. 15, and that she learned about the divorce filing “through the media” days later, the court documents revealed.
Jonas responded to the bombshell lawsuit via his rep, hoping that Turner would “reconsider her harsh legal position and move forward in a more constructive and private manner” and that “his only concern is the well-being of his children.”
The statement added: “The children were not abducted.”
The exes reached a temporary child custody agreement in October.
In March, Turner filed paperwork asking a judge to “reactivate” the divorce case after attempts to settle child custody and property failed, according to Page Six.
Turner and Jonas married in May 2019.
