David Beckham just gave a major update on whether the Spice Girls will go on tour

David Beckham is sharing sad news for Spice Girls fans who really, really want the group to reunite for a new tour.

Fans began clamoring for a Spice Girls tour in April after Beckham posted a video showing all five of the group's members — Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton and Beckham’s wife, Victoria Beckham — singing along to their hit song “Stop" at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday bash in London.

“It was an amazing moment,” David Beckham told Variety in a story published June 13 of the birthday reunion.

But as for a reunion tour? “Unfortunately, that’s not happening," the athlete said. "Victoria was so pleased to see the girls, and it was a massive part of her life, the girls, but obviously, all the girls have got their own things going on. They will do certain things together at certain times. But Victoria’s full on with her beauty and fashion businesses. If anyone’s busier than me, it’s her.”

He told Variety he was "the most excited of anyone" to see his wife together again with her bandmates.

"The fact that, obviously, we had all of the girls in one room. All of the girls haven’t been on a stage together for over 15 years. So, to have them all there, to have them all up on stage, to have our youngest son playing guitar?” he gushed.

He also said the unofficial birthday reunion was his idea. “The whole reason why the girls are actually up there was I didn’t want to do a traditional video of old clips and people saying, ‘Happy birthday, Victoria!’ My idea was to re-create the ‘Mama’ video, but I wanted it of just Victoria."

Though a Spice Girls reunion tour isn't in the works right now, David Beckham vowed to keep promoting the idea behind the scenes. “There’s nothing more that I’d like to see than the girls on stage again, so I’ll still work at it, don’t worry!" he said.

Prior to the reunion at Victoria Beckham's birthday bash, Brown, also known as Mel B, got fans excited about the possibility of the Spice Girls hitting the road again when she hinted that the group was working on something “very good” during a March 25 appearance on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna.

When asked what’s in the works for the Spice Girls, Brown, who was appearing on the show to discuss the expanded edition of her bestselling memoir, “Brutally Honest,” responded, “This is going to be really good and the fans are going to be really happy about it,” without elaborating further.

However, when host Jenna Bush Hager asked if fans will be able to catch the Spice Girls on a reunion tour, Brown paused and said, “Oh, I’m going to get in trouble. I'm not saying anything. OK, bye!” before walking out to laughter from Jenna and Hoda Kotb.

Read on for more about the Spice Girls and what else Brown has said in the past about a reunion.

When did the Spice Girls last perform together?

The Spice Girls last set out on tour as a four-person group in 2019, without Victoria Beckham. The last time the original five — Beckham, Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Chisholm and Emma Bunton — performed together was for the 2012 Olympics in London.

The quintet released a throwback video in March 2023, marking the 25-year anniversary of their hit “Stop.”

For the 3 1/2-minute song, the five stood directly next to one another and performed full choreography. Each one was dressed in a different outfit, likely resembling their former monikers: Scary Spice, Posh Spice, Ginger Spice, Sporty Spice and Baby Spice.

What else have the Spice Girls said about a reunion?

In a March interview on the British talk show “Loose Women,” Brown said the group was “definitely doing something.”

“I’m probably going to get told off (for saying the update), but I’ve said it. There you go,” she continued. “I’m in trouble now.”

Appearing on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna in January, Brown confirmed that fans can expect a reunion from all five original members.

In the interview with Hoda and Jenna, Brown wouldn’t give too many details about the pop group’s upcoming project, but teased it as the “gift that keeps on giving.”

Speaking with Sky News in May 2023, Brown addressed the idea of another Spice Girls tour, telling the outlet, “There will be — if I’ve got anything to do with it.”

Brown also shared on her January appearance on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna that the Spice Girls were newly available on British stamps, which had never been done before for a female pop group.

“It is massive for the Royal Mail. Usually it’s the queen and the king. Now, we’ve got Spice Girls, a girl group, on there, which doesn’t quite seem to make sense but it does to us,” she said with a laugh.

What did David Beckham say about the Spice Girls getting back together?

David Beckham told Variety in a story published June 13 he was “the most excited of anyone” to see all five Spice Girls together at Victoria Beckham's 50th birthday party in April.

However, he dashed the hopes of anyone waiting for a Spice Girls tour. “Unfortunately, that’s not happening,” the retired soccer pro said. “Victoria was so pleased to see the girls, and it was a massive part of her life, the girls, but obviously, all the girls have got their own things going on."

He vowed to keep working behind the scenes to make a tour happen.

“There’s nothing more that I’d like to see than the girls on stage again, so I’ll still work at it, don’t worry!” he said.
