In an October 1 report from Variety, Murphy shared, “[Series co-creator] Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing, and that we hope to get on the air next fall.”
He continued, “Sadly, we all love Lone Star, but the financials just didn’t work. It’s a Disney company that was on a Fox network, and it just was never going to work. And we had a long run of it. So now we’re going to launch a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s fun. And 9-1-1 moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night. They obviously have an appetite for that, so we’re going to give them another one that I really love.”
No details have yet been revealed about the location or premise. This will be the third show in the 9-1-1 franchise, with the original set in Los Angeles and 9-1-1: Lone Star, which is airing its fifth and final season, based in Austin, Texas.
What will the new 9-1-1 spinoff be about?
There are plenty of theories about where the upcoming 9-1-1 could be located and what it will be about. In a Reddit discussion about the spinoff, fans had some great location and character ideas. Check out the theories below.
Location: Las Vegas
What better backdrop for emergencies than Las Vegas? From the glitz of the Strip, to the endless number of tourists, and the desert landscape that experiences flash floods, there’s no shortage of action and drama to feature.
One fan asked, “It’s gonna be Las Vegas, isn’t it?” Another responded, “I think so. I remember reading an article about ABC eyeing a potential spinoff. They said multiple cities were being considered but the only one named was Vegas.”
A third fan said logistically “it makes sense since I’m guessing they can somewhat simulate Vegas on an LA lot.”
According to a report from Deadline, Las Vegas is “among potential cities considered.”

Location: Boston
There’s also plenty of love for colder climates where perhaps more weather-related incidents could play a role in the drama. “Hopefully, something cold weather like Boston or Minnesota!” one fan in the Reddit discussion said. Another agreed, noting, “It’s gonna be Boston.”
One 9-1-1 fan said Boston would make sense, sharing, “It’s already got a connection to the OG, and with Eli and Maddie and Chimney’s history in Boston they could easily set up some crossover eventually.”
One fan said they can definitely see a spinoff in Boston, but also hope they switch up the location even more. “I kind of hope it is a city with much more different terrain. Boston will just seem like another big city with colder weather,” they noted. “I’d rather they do someplace interesting where there is a very different type of first responder need.”

Character Theories
Of course, there’s more to the spinoff than location — will it be a cast of new characters or is there potential to bring some familiar faces on board?
One 9-1-1 fan noted that centering the show in Boston or New York City could work, character-wise. “We’ve yet to see something in the northeast — there’s already that connection with TK and Owen/Eli, Chim, and Maddie, and both are places that deal with much colder winters than Texas and California.”
Others discussed the possibility of Lone Star characters getting some love in the spinoff. “I wonder if they’ll have some OG characters move to the spinoff,” one person asked, with another responding, “I hope they will recycle some Lone Star characters, to be honest.”
In another Reddit discussion about Lone Star characters being in a spinoff series, one fan noted, “I think this could actually work really well and could give us an excuse to keep a character or two from Lone Star. Like T.K. and Carlos move to New York and we get 9-1-1: Big Apple or something.”
9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star are available to stream on Hulu.
