‘The SpongeBob Musical’: Here Come The Songs In Behind-The-Scenes Promo
Are you ready, kids? Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at Bikini Bottom (Eventually) Goes Broadway — otherwise known as The SpongeBob Musical. The clip focuses on the songs and songwriters that will fuel the show, which premieres next month in Chicago en route to the Main Stem for the 2016-17 season.
“The score has a huge range of style and scale,” director and co-conceiver Tina Landau says. That’s an understatement consider the talent lined to contribute the tunes. It’s clearly targeting fans of just about every genre — from classic and contemporary rock (Aerosmith, Panic! at the Disco) to country and pop (Lady Antebellum, Sara Bareilles) to R&B and hip-hop (John Legend and T.I.) and grab bag (They Might Be Giants, the Flaming Lips). Cyndi Lauper, Jonathan Coulton and Plain White T’s also contribute.
“We very specifically chose music that we wanted to sound exactly like the artist who was writing it but for a very particular reason for that part of the story,” Landau says. So grab a Krabby Patty, feed your pet snail and sample such SpongeBob-specific numbers as “Bikini Bottom Day” and “Not a Simple Sponge.” We don’t hear it, but Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips says “Tomorrow Is” “could possibly be our greatest song that we’ve written.”
Ethan Slater plays the absorbent and porous title character in the show, which opens June 7 at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre.
