SpongeBob Squarepants Appeared at the Super Bowl, and All Was Good
Okay, so it wasn't for any longer than it took to welcome Travis Scott to the stage, but it happened. Sandwiched between a (somewhat flat) performance from Maroon 5 and a brief interlude from Scott, SpongeBob Squarepants made his way to the Super Bowl stage, and we only have one critique: more SpongeBob.
An iconic singer, performer, and Krusty Krab delivery man, SpongeBob's brief appearance calls back to the invertebrate's timeless performance of "Sweet Victory" at the Bubble Bowl back in 2005. Backing him up was Squidward Tentacles as bandleader.
Of course, this is all just fodder for Millennial kids who grew up with the flamboyant yellow cartoon sponge, but it's especially poignant after Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob's creator, passed away unexpectedly at the end of last year. His work on Nickelodeon helped define a generation, and a Super Bowl appearance feels like an especially fitting send off.
As for Maroon 5's appearance, it wouldn't have hurt for Adam Levine and the rest of the, um, Maroons (?) to take a page from the residents of Bikini Bottom. Then again, this year's Super Bowl halftime performance was rife with complications. After multiple acts turned down the performance slot to stand in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, it was Levine and company who swooped in to offer us a performance alongside Scott and Big Boi.
Here's to hoping the league can skip the complications next year: Reinstate Kaepernick and let Cardi perform. In the meantime, SpongeBob has your back.
