Spoon's Britt Daniel among big names playing Michael Corcoran wake Monday at Antone's
If late American-Statesman music writer Michael Corcoran could curate the roster of performers playing his own wake, it's hard to imagine he would make any changes to the list of artists named for the show that will take place Monday at Antone's.
The afternoon celebrating the brilliant and sometimes acerbic writer will begin with a funeral at 2 p.m., followed by more than a dozen bands playing into the night. Befitting the writer with deep and eclectic tastes, the lineup spans genres from gospel to rock and even includes Corcoran's only child, Jack, who performs under the moniker Jack Henry.
Related: Michael Corcoran, longtime Austin music journalist and historian, has died. He was 68.
The show is free and open to the public, though there is a recommended $20 donation at the door to benefit the SIMS Foundation, which Corcoran helped envision following the suicide death of Pariah bassist Sims Ellison in 1995.
The lineup and set times are subject to change, but the music is set to begin at 4 p.m. with 30-minute set from gospel band the Jones Family Singers. Corcoran spent the last decade of his life advocating for what he called one of the most talented bands he'd ever seen. The late scribe penned the liner notes for the band's album "The Spirit Speaks."
“My group obtained much success because (Corcoran) supported us 100%,” Fred Jones wrote on Facebook following the writer's passing.
Spoon frontman Britt Daniels is slated to follow the Jones Family Singers with a set scheduled for 4:35 to 4:55 p.m. Corocran, who loved making and challenging people with lists, named Spoon the #2 Austin band of all time (behind Willie Nelson and the Family Band) on his Substack earlier this year. He wrote that with the band's "near-perfect 2001-2007 streak of 'Girls Can Tell,' 'Kill the Moonlight,' 'Gimme Fiction,' and 'Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga' all in a row, you can make a case for Spoon at #1."
Kevin Russell and Shinyribs are set to close the show in undoubtedly epic fashion from 8:50 to 9:20 p.m., following an evening of music that will include Corcoran favorites. Here is the list of performers scheduled to play between Daniel and Shinyribs: Tameca Jones, Eve Monsees, Ramsay Midwood, Kathy McCarty, Jack Henry, Kelly Willis, Courtney Santana, Jon Dee Graham, The Rite Flyers, Shoulders, and Wild Seeds.
A (somehow) larger memorial concert celebrating Corcoran's life will be announced in the coming months.
"We hope to see you there," Jack Corcoran wrote in a statement. "If you would like to honor Michael, we request donations to the SIMS Foundation in his name, an organization he imagined in an article following Sims Ellison’s death."
