Stephen Colbert spoofs summer blockbuster taglines on The Late Show
"We had twenty years to prepare. So did they." That's the tagline for Independence Day: Resurgence, but Stephen Colbert decided to have a bit of fun with that in a Late Show spoof of summer movie blockbusters.
In a bit called First Drafts, Colbert looked at early drafts of taglines for this summer's blockbusters. For Resurgence, he rewrote the tag as, "For 20 years Will Smith said 'no.' So we just made it without him."
As it happens, Smith was courted to reprise his role from Independence Day, but director Roland Emmerich said the poor reception to After Earth convinced the actor otherwise. So, what did they do? They killed off Captain Steven Hiller.
Other re-written taglines include Finding Dory, which officially reads, "She just kept swimming..." That now becomes, "Serve with butter & lemon." Colbert also revamped Captain America: Civil War to read, "the fun kind of Civil War, without all the slavery."
Watch for more early taglines for Ben-Hur, Central Intelligence, and Suicide Squad in the video above.
