Stephen King's 'Pet Sematary' rises again — and we have the chilling first trailer

The enormous 2017 box-office haul of It ($327.5 million domestic, $700.3 million global) proved, once again, that audiences can’t get enough of Stephen King’s famous tales of the macabre and malevolent. So it’s no surprise that Paramount Pictures has decided to readapt one of his most chilling novels — and the first trailer suggests it could be another blockbuster horror hit.

Pet Sematary was first brought to the screen in 1989, and it placed at No. 11 on our ranking of every movie based on a Stephen King book. The new film, directed by Kevin K?lsch and Dennis Widmyer, will apparently hew close to its source material, recounting the tragedy that befalls Louis (Jason Clarke) and Rachel Creed (Amy Seimetz) after they move with their children to a rural Maine house situated near an ancient pet cemetery, which has the power to resurrect whatever is interred in its soil. When the Creeds suffer an unthinkable loss, Louis finds himself increasingly drawn to use the burial ground for his own godly purposes, this despite the warnings of local Judd Crandall (John Lithgow) — leading to nothing but unholy trouble.

From the looks of the promo above, the new Pet Sematary seems to have the potential to be another triumph of the genre. The film arrives in theaters on April 5, 2019.
