Sterling K. Brown Joins Chadwick Boseman in Thurgood Marshall Movie
Sterling K. Brown has joined Chadwick Boseman and Josh Gad in the Thurgood Marshall drama “Marshall.”
Brown, who portrayed Christopher Darden in the FX series “The People V. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story,” will play the part of Joseph Spell, an itinerant worker newly relocated from Louisiana to Connecticut, where he is accused of the rape and attempted murder of a wealthy socialite.
The subsequent 1941 trial teamed a young Thurgood Marshall, counsel for a struggling NAACP, to Connecticut. He teamed with young Jewish lawyer Sam Friedman to defend Spell. The sensational trial, which ended with Spell being found not guilty, is set against a background of Northern racism and anti-Semitism.
Boseman is playing Marshall and Gad is portraying Friedman. “Django Unchained” producer Reginald Hudlin is directing from a a script by Michael Koskoff and his son, screenwriter Jacob Koskoff.
The film begins production this month in Buffalo, N.Y. “Marshall” is financed by Super Hero Films with Paula Wagner producing through her Chestnut Ridge Productions.
Brown recently wrapped on M. Night Shyamalan’s film “Split” and Dan Fogelman’s untitled NBC pilot. He is repped by Jennifer Wiley-Stockton of JWS Entertainment and Innovative Artists.
