Steve-O says he 'could' blame his drug addiction on M?tley Crüe

Even if you can’t tell your White Lion from your Great White, or your Danger Danger from your Dangerous Toys, or your Guns N' Roses from your L.A. Guns, there is still one big reason to tune into N?thin’ But a Good Time: The Uncensored Story of ’80s Hair Metal, and that is the heaping helping of absolutely insane stories served up on the three-part docuseries that premieres Sept. 17 on Paramount+.

Now, we’ve got another exclusive doozy for you that involves one of the stars of Jackass and the most notorious band to emerge from the early-‘80s L.A. metal scene.

In a revelation that will surprise absolutely no one, it seems Steve-O grew up a big fan of the “Shout at the Devil” auteurs M?tley Crüe, and in the clip that can be watched above, he explains how he concocted a plan to meet his heavily-teased hair heroes. Says Steve-O: “I loved M?tley Crüe so much when I was a kid that when they came to my town, I called every single hotel in the yellow pages asking to be put through to a room under the name of their manager, Doc McGhee.”

Wow, putting the actual work in. We like it! And that work paid off. “After calling for hours, this guy answered the phone and I said, ‘Is that Doc McGhee?’ and he said, ‘No, this is Doc’s brother, Scott,’” explains Steve-O.

Turns out the brother was close enough. “Scott McGhee was so impressed that I called every hotel in the yellow pages, he said, ‘That’s awesome. How would you like it if I gave you backstage passes for the show tomorrow night?’ And that was how I met Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee.”

There is a picture to document this meeting of the (very likely heavily inebriated) minds. However, it seems that in this case Steve-O did not put the work in to figure out what he would actually talk about with the heavy metal legends when they crossed paths backstage. “I mean, I didn’t have anything to say to those guys. They were just my heroes.”

And, of course, one usually wants to do exactly as their heroes do. So can we point a line from that fortuitous meeting to some of Steve-O’s actions as an adult? “I mean, I’m not going to blame my drug addiction on M?tley Crüe and all the bands of the '80s,” he says. “But I could.”

And why is that, Steve-O? “Cause they made it look so cool! They just made it seem so awesome to have sex and do drugs.” Spoken like a true baby of the 1980s hair metal scene.
