Stevie Wonder Sings “Happy Birthday” To Kamala Harris And Nearly Brings Her To Tears
Kamala Harris has been a force to be reckoned with these last few months as the Presidential election draws near. She continued the work this weekend despite celebrating her 60th birthday, but Stevie Wonder gave her a second to stop and smell the roses and nearly brought her to tears with his live rendition of “Happy Birthday.”
Harris visited Divine Faith Ministries International in Jonesboro, Ga., on Sunday (Oct. 20) to try and convince Black churchgoers to support her pursuit of the presidency. The legendary singer appeared at the event to give her his co-sign and be a conductor. Wonder got the entire crowd to sing to Harris, who visibly looked choked up and told him “I love you so much.”
The “Superstition” singer encouraged her to not cry before urging the crowd to see the value of voting. “We’re going to make the difference between yesterday and tomorrow,” he said while he singing an empowering rendition of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song and “Higher Ground.” Harris said she had to “check off a whole big one,” referring to her bucket list after being serenaded by Wonder.
After making sure to she soak in the moment, Harris continued the work. She visited two different churches on that day as part of the “Souls To The Polls” movement and worked alongside the National Advisory Board of Black Faith Leaders. The board specifically targets battleground states and upped the ante by chartering buses to take churchgoers to early polling stations.
“There is so much at stake right now,” Harris said, before taking subtle shots at her opposition, Donald Trump. “We understand for us to do good works, it means to do it in the spirit of understanding that our strength is not based on who we beat down, as some would try to suggest. Our strength is based on who we lift up. And that spirit is very much at stake in these next 16 days.”
