Streak of light over downtown L.A. caused by film shoot, not aliens or meteor, say police
Despite feeling weirdly on brand for 2019, aliens have not landed in Los Angeles.
A streak of red light visible across the city skyline Wednesday night had Angelenos wondering on social media whether they were witnessing everything from a fiery meteor to an incoming alien invasion. Instead, the LAPD ruined the fun by clarifying that the light had earthly origins.
It turns out — as ABC News reported and some eagle-eyed tweeters noticed — it was wingsuit flyers, more specifically the Red Bull Air Force, the company confirmed to EW.
Per a press release about the event provided to EW, Red Bull was celebrating the third and final supermoon of 2019 with its team of skilled skydivers who jumped from a helicopter 4,000 feet over Los Angeles and “swooped into the downtown at more than 120mph.” That streak of light witnesses saw was caused by “sparking pyrotechnics that lit up the night sky as the sun set and the supermoon rose.”
