It’s a Stream Come True: We May Finally Get to Watch Santa Barbara Again

NBC may have wiped Santa Barbara off the map in 1993, but thankfully, that doesn’t mean that we’ve seen the last of it. At the 51st Daytime Emmys, the soap’s co-creator Jerome Dobson revealed that it could soon be making a comeback of sorts, with old episode becoming available to watch anew via streaming.

“Well, there’s some legal footwork being done right now about that kind of possibility,” he told Michael Fairman TV. “There’s been so much demand to see Santa Barbara, and so it’s not totally out of the question.”

The show, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of its debut on July 30, was never a huge ratings hit in the States. But it earned a trophy case full of Emmys (including three in a row for Outstanding Drama Series) and was a smash in syndication, in particular in France.

Santa Barbara also shone a spotlight on a Who’s Who of daytime’s best-ever, among them Emmy winners A Martinez and Marcy Walker, who played supercouple Cruz Castillo and Eden Capwell, Nancy Lee Grahn and Lane Davies, who were whip-smart attorneys Julia Wainwright and Mason Capwell, and Justin Deas and Robin Mattson, who formed the ultimate scheme team as Keith Timmons and Gina Capwell.

Of the show’s breakout stars, Robin Wright, who originated the role of ingenue Kelly Capwell, is probably the best known.

In 2022, Grahn, who now plays Alexis Davis on General Hospital, disclosed her plan to resurrect Santa Barbara as a limited series, perhaps on Hulu. We can only hope that her efforts ultimately come to fruition, especially after seeing her and Davies acting together again on General Hospital.
