'Super Mario Bros. Movie' Smashes $1 Billion Mark Globally
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is here to say, “It’s-a-me, Mario, a billionaire!” Because 26 days after its April 5 opening, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has crossed the awe-inspiring $1 billion mark at the box office globally. According to Variety, that makes the video-game-based movie one of only five pandemic-era movies to join the Billionaire’s Club. It holds the coveted title alongside Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, and Avatar: The Way of Water—that’s-a-some good company.
Although fans initially raised their eyebrows at the casting of Chris Pratt as Mario, there was no stopping the beloved characters from winning over hearts and minds. And the (billion-dollar) success of this faithful retelling likely ensures we will see many more cinematic outings for our favorite Mario characters and other familiar Nintendo faces. Video game adaptations have been hitting it out of the park recently, and this latest achievement is the cherry on top—especially considering the last Super Mario Bros. theatrical outing did not go over as well as hoped.
Mario and Luigi may want you to think they are but humble plumbers, but we know the truth. Cue the sound of Mario’s golden coins, mountains and mountains of them.
