Superman & Lois’ Penultimate Episode Ends With ‘Emotional Hit,’ Setting the Stage for Devastating Series Finale
The writer/director of Monday’s Superman & Lois would like to apologize. Specifically to his mother.
“My mom is a huge fan of the show … but one of the things about her is that she hates cliffhangers,” Jai Jamison tells TVLine. “So I know my mom is going to hate this. She’s going to be so mad.”

The show’s penultimate episode ended with the Man of Steel facing off against a super-charged, super-pissed Doomsday — and the odds are, once again, not in our hero’s favor. As downtown Smallville erupted into chaos, Superman took a moment to remind his worried family how much they mean to him. “I love you,” he mouthed to Lois. “I always wi…” But before he could finish that sentence, along came Doomsday with another crushing blow.
“I wanted it to be an emotional hit and to end it on an unresolved note,” Jamison says, explaining that it was a nod to Superman and Doomsday’s first showdown last season. The last time this mutated beast fought Clark, it killed him, and that’s not lost on his family. “We’re just really playing on the stakes of that moment. And it’s a testament to Tyler, Bitsie, Michael and Alex. They all brought it.”
Meanwhile, another battle was brewing between Lex and Amanda, the latter of whom is finally beginning to see him for the waste of time he really is. “One of the things I love about Yvonne [Chapman] in that scene was when Lex turns on her and blows his lid, she doesn’t back down,” Jamison says. “Yes, maybe her feelings for Lex clouded certain aspects of her judgment, but she’s also a formidable person in her own right.”
So, where does this leave Clark & Co. as we head into next week’s (gulp) series finale? Simply put, “Our characters are at their wits’ end,” Jamison says. “They’re at their breaking point. Superman is trying his best to hold his own against Doomsday, but Lex still hasn’t played his final card. Dealing with this monster is going to take everyone coming together to make it through.”
Jamison adds that he also put “a little fun” into this episode, like Clark playing with the boys, to “get a taste of what could be lost” if Doomsday succeeds.
“Putting this episode together was daunting,” he says. “Going into the season, I knew I would be writing and directing an episode, but I thought it would be earlier. Then the assignment came through and I saw that it was the penultimate episode. Once I processed the shock, I was like, ‘Alright, let’s dial in. Let’s do it right.’”
