Tara Reid on box-office bomb 'Josie and the Pussycats': 'If it came out now, it would be huge'
It's a cult classic now, but when it was released in April 2001, the movie Josie and the Pussycats was a big flop.
Starring Tara Reid, Rosario Dawson and Rachael Leigh Cook, the comic book adaptation grossed just more than $14.9 million in theaters — remember those! — on a budget of $39 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
Reid, for one, thinks that would be different in an age of tweets and likes.
"I feel like if it came out now, it would be huge," she told TooFab.
She explained that the comedy, about evil record executives attempting to take advantage of an all-female rock band, is still very special to her.
"It's my favorite movie I've done," the star of movies including American Pie and Sharknado said. "If we had social media back there, it would've worked."
She described it as "ahead of its time" and "so smart."
In fact, it's now hailed as a "hidden feminist masterpiece" and "an entry-level feminist film" reeking of power, sarcasm and glitter." And, as Anne Cohen wrote for Refinery 29 in February 2020, directors Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont mocked capital excess by featuring tons of references to corporations such as Puma, Coke, Crest and Verizon.
While there was no Josie and the Pussycats theatrical sequel, the characters went on to be featured on The CW's Riverdale.
Reid, meanwhile, has a long list of upcoming projects. IMDb reports that she's filming the action thriller Dogmen, which co-stars the late DMX.
