U.S. tennis star Taylor Fritz came up just shy of taking home the U.S. Open title this weekend, losing to Jannik Sinner in a three-set battle. But aside from making history as the first U.S. man to appear in a Grand Slam final since 2009, Fritz also turned heads with his choice of footwear.

After years of wearing Nike tennis shoes, Fritz turned up to the U.S. Open in a pair of ASICS.

Fritz played the Grand Slam tournament in a pair of white and black ASICS Gel-Resolution 9 tennis shoes. Designed for all surfaces (from hard court to grass court and clay), the sneakers feature the brand’s trademark “DYNAWALL” and “DYNAWRAP” technology, which promise to cradle and support your feet for better movement and stability. ASICS says the shoes gives you “a locked-in feel when you’re making quick transitions.?”

The shoes have also been designed for comfort in mind, especially if you’ll be playing long five-set matches, like Fritz did against fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the U.S. Open semifinals. ASICS has always made comfortable shoes (the GEL-2160 are our go-to sneakers these days) but the GEL-RESOLUTION 9 also features a soft and flexible knit upper that’s breathable and lightweight — no sweaty shoes here. The tennis shoes are also designed for extended durability, especially in the toe and heel area, which often bears the brunt of the impact as you’re running around the court.

Fritz officially signed with ASICS as their latest global ambassador in August, just before the U.S. Open. In a press release, the footwear brand said they were thrilled to welcome the tennis star — and recent Olympic bronze medalist – to the family.

“ASICS is proud to align with such a talented athlete who has won one of a premium series of nine tournaments,” said Mitsuyuki Tominaga, President and COO, ASICS. “I greatly admire his attitude towards tennis, especially his relentless pursuit of every point, never giving up until the very end. Since the footwork is crucial to his playing style, we’re committed to supporting him from the feet throughout his future career, helping him make further progress as we continue to elevate each other.”

“I’m really excited about this new partnership,” adds Fritz. “I’ve seen so many top players using ASICS shoes on tour over the years, so I know I’m in good hands. By chance, I tried the shoes during a photoshoot and then in practice that same afternoon, and I immediately felt more comfortable than I have in years. The comfort, the support, the speed—it’s just on another level. I’m extremely proud to represent a brand with such a rich history in sports and footwear, and one that cares so deeply about health and wellness.”

As mentioned earlier, Fritz was previously wearing Nike tennis sneakers before leaving the athletic giant for ASICS. Nike, for their part, still works with athletes like Naomi Osaka and Carlos Alcarez.
