Taylor Swift Just Publicly Embraced Trump Supporter Brittany Mahomes At The US Open, And This Is Why It’s Kind Of A Big Deal
Last week, Brittany Mahomes hit the headlines after former president and convicted felon Donald Trump thanked her for her support amid his 2024 presidential campaign.
For context, it all started when Brittany, who is married to NFL star Patrick Mahomes, was spotted “liking” one of Trump’s social media posts last month.
On Aug. 13, he shared "The 2024 GOP Platform" to his Instagram page, which includes several talking points that rely on misinformation, bigotry, and/or targeting minorities, such as, "Deport pro-Hamas radicals," "Keep men OUT of women's sports," "Cut federal funding for any school pushing Critical Race Theory," and "Stop the migrant crime epidemic."
Before long, numerous screenshots emerged showing that Brittany had “liked” Trump's post before seemingly unliking it, prompting widespread criticism online. However, Brittany appeared to double down on her like in an Instagram story post that many interpreted to be a response to the backlash.
She wrote at the time: “I mean honestly, to be a hater as an adult, you have to have some deep rooted issues you refuse to heal from childhood. There’s no reason your brain is fully developed and you hate to see others doing well."
Brittany was then seen liking pro-Trump comments on her Instagram post, including one that read: “Glad to see you aren’t backing down. We’re all entitled to our own opinions and shouldn’t be bullied into submission.”
Another comment that was liked by Brittany simply stated: “TRUMP-VANCE 2024.”
All of this led to Trump himself publicly thanking Brittany for her support. On Sept. 4, he wrote on his Truth Social account: “I want to thank beautiful Brittany Mahomes for so strongly defending me, and the fact that MAGA is the greatest and most powerful Political Movement in the History of our now Failing Country.”
“With Crime and Illegal Immigration totally out of control, INFLATION Ravaging all Americans, and a World that is laughing at the stupidity of our hapless ‘leaders,’ it is nice to see someone who loves our Country, and wants to save it from DOOM,” he added. “What a great couple - See you both at the Super Bowl!”
So, when pop singer Taylor Swift sat in a different suite to Brittany at last week’s Kansas City Chiefs game, it was widely speculated that it was in response to Brittany becoming so aligned with Trump.
In case you didn’t know, Taylor has forged a close friendship with Brittany since she started dating Patrick’s teammate and best friend, Travis Kelce, last year.
Last football season, the two women were regularly spotted looking cozy in a shared suite while watching their partners’ games. Brittany also appeared to gain access to Taylor’s inner circle, and has been papped on a girls’ night out with the star and her famous friends, including Sophie Turner.
Taylor also hosted Brittany at an exclusive party at her Rhode Island home at the end of August, just days after Brittany’s eyebrow-raising Instagram activity.
Despite this, many interpreted Taylor’s distance from her friend at last week's game to be some kind of public stance against Brittany’s growing pro-Trump reputation.
However, Taylor proved this was not the case when she excitedly reunited with Brittany at the US Open on Sunday.
The two couldn’t have looked closer and were both smiling broadly as Taylor affectionately embraced Brittany in their shared box at the tennis event.
Unsurprisingly, Taylor’s fans were disappointed to see her ongoing public alliance with somebody Trump himself acknowledged as one of his supporters — especially as Taylor hasn’t used her huge platform to endorse anybody in the upcoming election.
This is particularly interesting as in 2020, Taylor famously released a documentary called Miss Americana, in which she passionately and emotionally discusses why it is so important for her to speak up about politics.
While her team were concerned about her decision to endorse a Democrat candidate during the Tennessee 2018 midterm election, Taylor insisted: “This is something I know is right. I need to be on the right side of history.”
Interestingly, in an interview with the Guardian shortly before this documentary’s release, Taylor admitted that she felt “really remorseful for not saying anything” during the 2016 US election, which Trump won.
And during the 2020 election, Taylor appeared to learn from her past mistakes, using her platform to both speak out against Trump and publicly endorse President Joe Biden.
But four years later, Taylor has reverted back to silence, which arguably makes her close association with Brittany all the more troubling.
This isn’t the first time in recent memory that Taylor has sparked backlash for who she chooses to associate with; just last year, the star’s brief relationship with The 1975 frontperson Matty Healy was heavily criticized.
Taylor remained defiant amid scrutiny from her own dedicated fanbase, who took issue with their romance due to Matty’s long history of problematic and controversial behavior, which included making racist, misogynist, anti-Muslim, and antisemitic comments, and even appearing to do a Nazi salute on stage just months before his relationship with Taylor went public.
The two broke up after around one month of dating, with Taylor suggesting on her most recent album, The Tortured Poets Department, that Matty ended up ghosting her.
Despite this, there is also a track on the album, “But Daddy I Love Him,” which appears to call out the fans who spoke out against their romance, with Taylor referring to her critics as “judgmental freaks” and “vipers.”
