Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce busted out some dance moves at the US Open as The Darkness’ 2003 hit “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” blared over the loudspeakers — and now the song’s singer is reflecting on the “heartwarming” moment.

The Grammy winner and her Kansas City Chiefs star boyfriend, both 34, made quite the splash from their private box at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 8, dancing passionately, playing air guitar and singing along to “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.”

Justin Hawkins, The Darkness’ lead singer and guitarist, revealed in a TikTok that Swift has actually been a longtime fan of the song, and told him so in a sweet message after he attended a show on her Eras Tour in July.

Hawkins, 49, said he caught one of Swift’s shows in Zurich, Switzerland, and found the hospitality “extraordinary,” as she’d left a “lovely” handwritten letter for him at his seat in the VIP section.

The rocker shared a photo of the note on Swift’s personal stationery, which dubs her a “songwriter [and] feline enthusiast.”

“Justin, What a thrill to have you at the show! I’m a massive fan of yours and think ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ is one of the greatest songs of all time,” she wrote. “I hope you and your family have fun at the show! Thanks so much for coming!! Love, Taylor.”

Hawkins joked that the “Fortnight” singer’s generosity helped him take the title of “dad of the year” — and that he was equally thrilled to see her jamming out to “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” at the US Open.

“I was just dad of the year — maybe dad of the century, because all of that was a big surprise,” he said. “Speaking of big surprises, I woke up this morning and everybody’s forwarded me some footage of ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ being played at the US Open; Taylor Swift and her partner Travis dancing along to it and really enjoying the music.”

He continued, “It was a really heartwarming moment for me, and my little girl can’t wait to tell her friends at school. So thanks Taylor, thanks Travis, thanks everybody who enjoys tennis. That’s a really lovely start to the day. Nice one, guys. Cheers.”

Swift and Kelce’s surprise appearance at the US Open was just one of their many stops on a whirlwind weekend in New York City, where the pair traveled after Kelce’s Chiefs took a season opener win against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5.

On Sept. 6, the couple grabbed dinner at Lucali in Brooklyn, and the next night attended model Karen Elson’s wedding to Electric Lady Studios owner Lee Foster at the legendary recording studio, where Swift recorded much of her most recent album, The Tortured Poets Department.

After the US Open, Swift and Kelce went to dinner at Meduza, where they sat in a private room with friends including Patrick and Brittany Mahomes.

The Chiefs are next set to play against the Bengals on Sunday, Sept. 15 in Kansas City, while Swift will resume her Eras Tour on Oct. 18 in Miami.
