The Grammys’ Most Surprising Wins: Remember When ‘Mary Poppins’ Beat the Beatles?

The Grammy Awards are not always won by the superstars — and some of music’s greatest names have suffered surprising losses on music’s biggest night.

Take the Beatles, for instance. Arguably the greatest band in history, they won only five Grammys while they were still together. Their biggest loss probably came when the soundtrack to their first film, A Hard Day’s Night, lost the Grammy to the music from Mary Poppins — a classic in its own right, but still, what?

In 1981, music legends like Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel, and Barbra Streisand all lost every major award to Christopher Cross — who would sweep Record, Album, and Song of the Year, plus Best New Artist — and yet never won another Grammy in his career.

And probably the most shocking recent upset came in 2011 — when it seemed a lock that Justin Bieber would win Best New Artist in his Grammy debut. But instead it went to a cello player named Esperanza Spalding. As you can imagine, the Beliebers were pretty ticked off.
