What we know about Star Wars movie The Mandalorian & Grogu

The galaxy's favourite bucket-headed hired gun (sorry Boba Fett) is jet-packing his way to the big screen in 2026 in the hotly anticipated Star Wars movie event The Mandalorian & Grogu.

With Season 3 of The Mandalorian out in the wild, we’ve been inching ever closer to the franchise's crossover event that was first announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023.

Dave Filoni, the man who has been integral to so much of Star Wars output since the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012 — from Clone Wars and Rebels to The Mandalorian and Ahsoka — will produce the film with Iron Man's Jon Favreau directing.

Very few details were revealed about the film at Star Wars Celebration, leading many fans to wonder about key details - like what it will actually be about, when might be able to see it and who it'll star.

With that in mind, here's everything we know about The Mandalorian & Grogu so far...

When will The Mandalorian & Grogu be released?

The Mandalorian & Grogu will be released in cinemas globally on 22 May, 2026. It will be the first live-action Star Wars film to hit cinemas since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

What is the plot of The Mandalorian & Grogu?

There were no major plot details announced at Star Wars Celebration, but we know the film will take place during the New Republic Era and will “close out” the interconnected stories of these Disney+ series.

Anyone familiar with Star Wars canon or with the Expanded Universe will know the significance of Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen), and it seems likely that the blue-skinned Chiss will have a major impact on the machinations of the movie.

It also seems possible that the film could fill in the gaps left by The Rise of Skywalker and provide further clarity on just how Emperor Palpatine returned. We already know cloning has played a major role in The Mandalorian, and Chapter 23 titled ‘The Spies’ name dropped Project Necromancer – hinting towards the Imperial Remnant’s eventual goal of restoring Sheev Palpatine.

Speaking to Collider, Filoni filled in some blanks about what the story might address.

He said, “Things aren’t great when we begin The Force Awakens. So Jon and I looked at that time period, and when he knew he wanted The Mandalorian in it, one of the things I told him early on was, ‘Well, I have this epilogue in Star Wars: Rebels that’s kind of dealing with that time period’, which you’ve seen at the end with Sabine and Ahsoka going off.

"So a lot of these threads start to come together, and then I looked at the bigger body of work that’s been done and what’s relevant, and a story will emerge out of that.”

During the project's official title reveal, director Favreau said: “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created... The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Lucasfilm boss Kennedy added: "Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen."

Who is in the cast of The Mandalorian & Grogu?

It’s safe to say that The Mandalorian & Grogu will be something of an ensemble when it comes to its cast. With plenty of television to get through before the opening crawl of the movie, characters will be introduced and it’s likely that some will die, so nothing is set in stone.

Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin seems all but certain to appear on the big screen. Speaking to Esquire about the possibility of joining the Star Wars film universe, Pascal responded, “F*** yeah”, so we can bank on that happening. Based on the film's title, we know that Djarin's pint-sized pal Grogu will be along for the ride too.

Unfortunately, that's all we know for sure. However, as production starts to get underway, we're sure we'll start hearing more about who will join the cast of Star Wars' latest big-screen outing.

The other Mandalorian we hope to see on the big screen is Lady Bo-Katan Kryze, played by none other than Katee Sackhoff.

Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano, Temuera Morrison’s Boba Fett and Jude Law’s as-yet-unnamed Skeleton Crew character also feel like sure bets. As does Lars Mikkelsen’s Grand Admiral Thrawn, who appeared in the recent Ahsoka show.

Sabine Wren and Hera Syndulla, two characters who made their live-action debuts this summer in Ahsoka are likely to appear as well. They will be played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, respectively.

Other characters we could see include Greef Karga, Cobb Vanth, Fennec Shand, Migs Mayfield and Captain Carson Teva, played by Carl Weathers, Timothy Olyphant, Ming-Na Wen, Bill Burr and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, respectively.

Is there a trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu?

There is no trailer for the project just yet, with it still being a while off.
