'The View' co-host Whoopi Goldberg says women 'drank Drano, drank Tide' before abortions were legal

The co-hosts of “The View” weighed in after the Alabama Senate passed a near-total ban on abortions.

Wednesday’s show began with the controversial conversation, and co-host Joy Behar pointed out that the majority who voted in favor of the law all had something in common. “They’re all men. All white guys,” she said. “Maybe we should make it a law that they should all be required to get a vasectomy, that group in particular,” the panelist said.

But Whoopi Goldberg used the platform to remind viewers of what it was like before women had access to legal abortions.

“People don’t remember that one of the reasons it became legal is so it could be done cleanly and you could go some place that wasn’t a back alley,” she said. “Women were being found in bathrooms, women were being found in apartments that had been abandoned. When a woman decides that she cannot do this, she does what she needs to do,” she continued.

Goldberg didn’t stop there, adding “she drank Drano, she drank Tide with tea and coffee, all kinds of stuff, throw themselves down stairs. In order to stem that they made this legal so that you could go to someplace where you didn’t have that outcome,” said the co-host.

Sunny Hostin warned the panel that the vote in Alabama is a sign of things to come.

“I think it will reach the Supreme Court. I’ve said it before that by the end of 2019 we’ll see that abortion will be either severely restricted or illegal in about 20 states. But this has always been the plan. It’s has always been the plan at least since 1973 to challenge Roe vs. Wade,” said Hostin.

“Completely overturning it? I think now is the first time since 1973 that it is possible,” she added.

Meghan McCain disagreed. “I actually don’t think it’s going to be repealed,” she said. “Americans are actually extremely split on this topic,” McCain added.

Behar made her view clear: “When people start to hear what happens to a woman who has to get a back alley abortion and how dangerous that is, talk about ‘preserving life,’ you could kill the woman because of this law being reversed.”
