Things to do this weekend: Monster Jam at Ford Field, comics and cosplay in Warren
The final weekend of February in metro Detroit brings excitement and includes a heart-pounding monster truck event, multicultural festivities along Detroit’s scenic riverfront, a live performance by a Grammy award-winning musician, a lively Greek Fest and a family-fun comic convention.
Here are five things to do for the weekend of Feb. 23-25.
Kenny Garrett in concert
Grammy-winning artist Kenny Garrett, an alto saxophonist, composer and one of three Detroiters named National Endowment of Arts Jazz Masters last year, will perform his new album, "Sounds from the Ancestors," on Friday night in Detroit. The album explores West African music and its influence on jazz, R&B and gospel music.
8 p.m. Friday, Max M. & Majorie S. Fisher Music Center, 3711 Woodward in Detroit. Tickets start at $19.
Great Lakes Comic Convention
More than 150 vendors, artists and crafters are expected at this comic book, toy and collectible event that will include cosplay fun, Dungeons & Dragons, costume contests, celebrities, video game tournaments, gaming and more.
Eric Bischoff, Guy Gilchrist, Seth Damoose, Noah Hathaway, Steve Lavigne, Jim Lawson, Noah Sult, Rick Goldschmidt, and Angel Medina are a few celebrity guests scheduled to attend.
There will also be a Super Smash Bros. tournament, Magic the Gathering, Pokemon open play and face painting.
5-9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at the Macomb Community College Expo Center, 14500 E. Twelve Mile Road in Warren. $20.
Greek Fest
Enjoy authentic food and spirits, live Greek music, dancing, shopping, and church tours and iconography.
Noon-9 p.m. Saturday and noon-6 p.m. Sunday at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 36375 Joy Road in Westland.
Monster Jam
Watch world-class athletes and their 12,000-pound monster trucks compete in speed and skill competitions. Events will include racing, freestyle and two-wheel skills. Vehicles like Grave Digger, Megalodon and others will show off skills, stunts and all-out racing.
5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Ford Field in Detroit. Tickets start at $20.
Lunar New Year at Valade
The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy invites everyone to its final weekend of Winter at Valade to enjoy celebrations from around the globe and to celebrate Lunar New Year with a food truck rally, parades, dance performances, music, karate demos, crafts and more.
4-9 p.m. Friday, noon-9 p.m. Saturday, and noon-7 p.m. Sunday at Robert C. Valade Park, along the East Riverfront in downtown Detroit at 2670 East Atwater.
