Thousands brave heat for Billy Joel concert at Coors Field
DENVER (KDVR) — Some outdoor events and activities this weekend will be affected by the heat in Denver, including one of the biggest concerts of the summer.
Thousands packed Coors Field on Friday night to see Billy Joel perform in Denver for the first time in five years. None of them let triple-digit temperatures keep them away.
“I love heat, man. Where’s my plane to Vegas?” joked Ron Bahnke, who came to the show from Laramie, Wyoming, with his wife, Julia.

Another couple came from South Dakota to see the show, not knowing it would be 100 degrees on the day of the concert.
“We bought the tickets in January when it was very cold,” one concertgoer said.
Coors Field changes policies during record heat
The stadium changed a couple of policies to keep guests safe, including allowing water to be brought inside as well as adding water bottle filling stations around the venue. The Bahnkes grabbed a couple of bottles on their way in as part of their plan to stay cool.
“Water and probably an adult beverage or two,” Ron said.
Coors Field also boosted paramedic presence, with first responders on bikes and on foot around the stadium — all measures fans are glad to have but hope they won’t need.
“We’re hardcore. We’ve been through cold weather and we can make it through hot,” one fan said.

Coors Field is not the only venue with shows this weekend. Red Rocks Amphitheatre has concerts on both Saturday and Sunday nights, and sealed water is allowed to be brought in.
Concert venues are not the only outdoor activities impacted. If you plan to head to the Denver Zoo, it will open early at 7:30 a.m. Saturday through Monday to help visitors beat the heat.
