Are Marvel fans ready for Thunderbolts*?

The final installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Five hit San Diego Comic-Con 2024, where the audience at Hall H caught a tantalizing glimpse of the film ahead of its May 2, 2025 release.

Thunderbolts* brings the return of Sebastian Stan and Florence Pugh to the big screen, as Bucky Barnes a.k.a. The Winter Soldier and Russian Black Widow Yelena Belova, respectively. The movie also brings back David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost and more. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is set to reprise her role Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the recruiter of the titular superheroes — all reformed villains seeking redemption.

At San Diego Convention Center’s Hall H at Comic-Con on Saturday, July 27, Pugh, 28, shared that "the joy of watching them [this team of former villains] is that they don’t play well together.”

Both Stan, 41, and Harbour, 49, agreed that Pugh, 28, proved the movie's star during filming. "This one right here," Stan said, after panel moderator Rob Delaney asked what stands out about the upcoming movie.

"Electric to work with," Harbour, who reprises his role as Pugh's character's onscreen father after 2021's Black Widow, said. "The complexity of their relationship, this time around we got to go to all these different levels. There’s warmth and humor…but he’s a terrible narcissist. And she’s very dedicated to killing people… I’m really proud of what we did.”

Directed by Jake Schreier and co-written by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, Thunderbolts* was first announced at Comic-Con 2022. Also revealed then and still on the horizon for the Marvel Cinematic Universe are The Fantastic Four (scheduled for July 25, 2025), a Blade reboot and two planned Avengers installments. Anthony Mackie's Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters Feb. 14, 2025.

Not much was confirmed about Thunderbolts* prior to Marvel’s Hall H panel this year. Steven Yeun, at one point in talks to play a major character, revealed in January that he dropped out due to schedule issues. Cast members Geraldine Viswanathan, Lewis Pullman and Hannah John-Kamen also joined for Saturday's panel, where Stan reflected on playing the character Bucky Barnes for so many years. "It’s like having nine lives. How many are left?" he said. "It’s been a privilege."

Pugh, 28, gave fans an illicit peek of the movie’s Atlanta, Georgia set back in March. In a video she posted to Instagram, the Oppenheimer star could be seen joking to Schreier, “someone’s going to come and rugby tackle me.” Showing off various details from the set, she implored viewers: “Don’t tell anyone.”

San Diego Comic-Con runs July 24–28. Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* premieres in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2025.
