Timothee Chalamet Is Bringing Bob Dylan's Life to the Big Screen: Inside the Musician Biopic Film

While there’s certainly no shortage of celeb biopics these days, that doesn’t mean we don’t get excited when a new one comes around — especially when it’s chronicling the personal life and career of none other than Bob Dylan, portrayed by 28-year-old actor Timothée Chalamet. With the trailer having just dropped for A Complete Unknown, here’s everything we know so far about the film.

Who is starring in the Bob Dylan biopic?

Timothée Chalamet will take the lead in this film as Bob Dylan himself, and the young star is surrounded by a group of celebrated actors who bring this story to life. The movie will also feature Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Boyd Holbrook as famed singer Johnny Cash, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez and plenty of other familiar faces.

Will Timothee Chalamet really sing in the Bob Dylan movie?

Chalamet will lend his vocals to the film, and he can be heard in the recently released trailer singing the Dylan classic, “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.” This wouldn’t be the first time the young actor – who rose to fame in high school dramedy Lady Bird – showed off his vocal chops. He most recently starred in the 2023 musical film Wonka and played the role of the candy man himself.

Achieving the signature Dylan sound and swagger was not something Chalamet has taken lightly. In a 2023 interview with GQ, he revealed that he enlisted the help of his Dune: Part 2 co-star Austin Butler’s Elvis prep crew to get into character.

Butler, who brought to life the famed singer in the 2022 biopic, was celebrated for his commitment to the role and capturing Elvis’ essence.

I’ve basically been working with his entire Elvis team for my Dylan prep,” Chalamet revealed. “There’s a wonderful dialect coach named Tim Monich. Vocal coach named Eric Vetro. Movement coach named Polly Bennett. I just saw the way he committed to it all — and realized I needed to step it up.”

What does Bob Dylan think about the movie?

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the director of the film described the interaction he had with Dylan, in which the singer asked what the movie was about.

Bob said, ‘What’s this movie about, Jim?’ I said, ‘It’s about a guy who’s choking to death in Minnesota and leaves behind all his friends and family and reinvents himself in a brand-new place, makes new friends, builds a new family, becomes phenomenally successful, starts to choke to death again — and runs away.”

Dylan’s response? “I like that.”

While there’s no set date yet for the release of the film, fans can expect to see it in theaters in December. We can’t wait to see Chalamet bring this story to life!
