Tina Fey and Steve Martin on 'SNL'Nothing haunts a comedian quite the like the expectation that they have to be funny. All the time. Just ask Tina Fey, who admits she's "haunted" almost every day by Steve Martin confirming all her fears once at Saturday Night Live.
During Fey's appearance on Tuesday's episode of Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, she told the story of an offhand comment from Martin at the time still lives in her brain rent-free.
"Something I think about a lot, and I fall short of it constantly, but a million years ago, I was a writer still at SNL and I remember Steve Martin came to do something on the show," Fey said. "He wasn't hosting, but he came to the show and he had just been on Letterman the night before. I said, 'Oh my gosh, you were so funny on Letterman last night,' and he just very matter-of-factly said, 'Oh, well, you have to kill every time.' And that has haunted me every day since."

Fey's story had Poehler laughing hard, but she added that it's not just a joke. "He's right!" she said. "If you're a beautiful actress from I don't know, like Melrose Place, whatever, you can go on and be like, 'I went to the store once.' But if you're a comedy person? You have to kill every time? Oh god."
The two comedians both admitted they don't think they've ever actually booked a job from an audition, and reminisced on some of their more embarrassing moments from their early careers. Poehler said her "wonky teeth" kept her from booking "bite and smile" commercials, and Fey said the scar on her face destroyed her confidence going into an audition once.

"This commercial is for someone pulling into a drive-through and I have this scar on the left side of my face that's way faded now but it was much more prominent then," Fey said. "Similar to the teeth thing, I was like, 'Guess who's not going to book this.' With my short hair with the perm on top and a big scar. I remember scooting in my chair, 'pulling into the drive-through,' like, 'I'll have the fish filet meal, and my scar will have an orange soda,' and then just leaving."
Poehler laughed as she joked, "You're not going to reject me. I'm going to reject you."
Fey laughed as she agreed. "It's like, what are we doing here?" she added. "I traveled 45 minutes each way."
