Todd Chrisley's son Kyle says suicide attempt led to recent hospitalization
Kyle Chrisley is opening up about last month's hospitalization. Appearing on his father and stepmother's Chrisley Confessions podcast, Todd Chrisley's eldest son said he attempted suicide.
"Well, I take medication and I had a bad side effect to it and I tried to take my own life," he revealed. At the time, a family spokesperson said "an adverse reaction to his medication" landed Kyle in the hospital.
"With the meds, I got all kinds of crazy thinking going on," Kyle added.
"Well, I think some of the medications they put you on that you had not been on, one of the side effects is suicidal tendencies, correct?" Todd asked. "And we're now off of that."
"Yes, we're off of that," Kyle confirmed. He's now getting "one shot a month," although neither he nor Todd elaborated on what that shot is.
"You feel better, right?" Todd asked.
"Yeah, a lot better," Kyle said.
Kyle was diagnosed with bipolar disorder around age 17 and has battled substance abuse issues from "self medicating," according to Todd, who shared his son has been to "forty, fifty-something" rehab centers. The two reconciled earlier this year after a public estrangement. Todd shared that while the two were not close, he always had an eye on his son.
"Folks, I hired a private investigator to watch him every week, send me photographs of him in his uniform looking so handsome I was so proud, just to make sure my son was OK," Todd said. (Kyle worked for the UPS.) "So for all of you folks and all of you tabloid writers that wanted to write I turned my back on my child, I don't owe you an explanation... I knew everything my son was doing. I prayed every day for his recovery, for his wellness, for his mental health and for God to bring him back when he was ready."
Todd is currently estranged to only one of his five children: daughter Lindsie. Kyle and Lindsie are the reality star's two children from his first marriage to Teresa Chrisley Terry. Todd and Julie Chrisley have three children together: Chase, Savannah and Grayson.
The Chrisley Knows Best patriarch said he's still holding out hope for a reconciliation with Lindsie, although he believes she played a role in the federal charges against him.
"I love Lindsie as much as I love Savannah," Todd maintained. He added, "I love her always and I will die loving her, but I have right now, I have four of my children and I am grateful for that. And the door is open for the fifth at all times."
Lindsie has said recently she's open to a reconciliation, but doesn't believe her father has made a genuine effort.
