The news was revealed by Head of Amazon & MGM Studios Jen Salke at the company’s Upfront event in New York, who called it an “epic” and “globe-trotting” series.
“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all,” said Waller-Bridge.
It’s the latest order for Amazon this morning, which gave the Nic Cage-led Spider Man live-action series an order alongside a slew of unscripted series and renewals.
Fleabag creator and star Waller-Bridge is writing the Tomb Raider series, but no cast has been set.
Deadline revealed last year that the Tomb Raider series was part of a wider universe at Amazon that would also include films and games.
Dmitri Johnson from dj2, who had secured the rights to the IP, is believed to be overseeing the development of the franchise and producing.
Deadline reported last year that Waller-Bridge was teaming on the project with Amazon Studios’ former Head of Comedy Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt, most recently Head Of First-Look and Overall Deals.
Legendary is also involved as rights holders; the company also is behind an anime Tomb Raider series at Netflix.
The series is executive produced by Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins through Wells Street Productions, Dmitri M. Johnson through dj2 Entertainment, Michael Scheel, and Legendary Television as well as Crystal Dynamics. Greenblatt and Andolina are consulting producers under their Star Party banner. The series is produced by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios.
