Travis Scott honors Vegas shooting victims nearly a year later: 'No one can take this city or this country down, ever!'
When rapper Travis Scott played the Life Is Beautiful festival in downtown Las Vegas on Saturday night, he took a moment during his high-energy set to honor the 59 victims of the Route 91 Harvest country music festival massacre — the deadliest mass shooting by an individual in modern U.S. history — which occurred in Vegas almost a year ago. “I just want to give my condolences to the families that suffered what happened back on Oct. 1 to the city of Las Vegas,” Scott began solemnly. “It’s an amazing city. The city of Las Vegas is amazing, and one thing I know about this place is it brings people from all over the world. It’s a warm place to have a good f***ing time. So it’s an honor every day that I can come out here and perform in front of you guys. So to anyone who was out there, to anybody that had a family member out there who was just living the experience, my condolences from the Cactus Jack family. We love you. Las Vegas. Stay strong forever. No one can take this city or this country down, ever!”
Scott’s DJ also noted: “Out of respect for what happened last year, with all the sound effects and s***, I’m going to take it easy on the gunshots [sound effects] tonight, you know what I’m saying? No gunshot sound effects tonight.” Along with wanting to be appropriate and respectful, Scott and his entourage may have wanted to avoid a controversy like the one that happened at Bonnaroo in June, when Eminem’s eerily realistic gunfire sounds during his performance of “Kill You” had concertgoers screaming and ducking, fearing they were under an actual attack.
Last year, shortly after the Las Vegas tragedy, it was reported that gunman Stephen Paddock may have scoped out Life Is Beautiful (as well as Chicago’s Lollapalooza) before ultimately targeting the Route 91 Harvest festival.
