Trent Reznor: Pausing Nine Inch Nails for Apple Music Has Been Worth It
Apple Music’s highly publicized streaming service launched Tuesday (June 30), and no one seems happier than Trent Reznor. The Nine Inch Nails mastermind revealed that although he’s been tinkering with some new music, its his role with the app’s Beats 1 radio platform that has him most enthused.
“I’ve been messing around with some things,” Reznor told Rolling Stone, in regards to new music. After going through a period of heavy touring, Reznor says he was working on some scores alongside his duties with Apple.

Whatever he’s been working on, it doesn’t sound like it’s part of a forthcoming release. “It’s not a record I’m trying to finish in a month,” he said. “It’s more just feeling around in the dark and seeing what sounds interesting. It’s nice to do that every few years to try and reinvent and discover and try to learn about yourself and what feels exciting to you as an artist.”
Originally, Reznor was Beats Music’s chief creative officer. After Apple acquired Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s company last year, Reznor stayed on to help design Beats 1, Apple Music’s radio station.
“It’s certainly been worth my time taking time off from Nine Inch Nails to focus on trying to make this experience great,” he concluded.
Beats 1 radio features shows with Zane Lowe, Dr. Dre, Elton John, Josh Homme, and others.
Nine Inch Nails’ last studio album was 2013’s Hesitation Marks. In 2014, he toured North America with Soundgarden and worked on the score for the film Gone Girl.
