Tyler, the Creator is tackling his first-ever film role.
The rapper and fashion designer is set to appear in Josh Safdie’s upcoming A24 movie Marty Supreme, which Variety reports will follow a professional ping pong player. Further plot details are currently unknown, but given that Safdie co-directed films like Good Time and Uncut Gems with his brother Benny Safdie, I’d wager that some chaotic arthouse fare is in order.
Marty Supreme’s star-studded cast also includes Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow. Fans might remember that Tyler previously rapped, “Tell Tim Chalamet to come get at me” in his 2018 song “Okra,” which Chalamet pseudo-responded to by retweeting a fan meme about the shout-out. Flash forward six years, and the two are starring in a movie together — that’s a full-circle moment if I’ve ever seen one!
Speaking anonymously to IGN, laid-off Pixar employees say that higher-ups wanted the movie to “avoid LGBTQ themes.”
Of course, the “BEST INTEREST” singer is no stranger to Hollywood. He previously co-created and acted in the Adult Swim sketch comedy show Loiter Squad alongside fellow members of the Los Angeles hip hop collective Odd Future. Tyler also co-created the animated series The Jellies, which centered on a jellyfish family and their adopted human son; and the Vice docuseries Nuts and Bolts, which followed the rapper as he learned how some of his favorite things — from stop-motion animation to Converse shoes — are created.
More recently, he appeared in an episode of his friend Jerrod Carmichael’s Max series Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show. In the episode, Carmichael documented the entire vulnerable, often awkward process of confessing his romantic feelings for Tyler and ultimately getting rejected. It isn’t always an easy episode to watch, but there’s an openness the two of them share that makes me excited to see what the multi-hyphenate will bring to a feature-length acting role.
In the meantime, I can’t help but dream about Chalamet himself hopping on an “Okra” remix. It’s what the people deserve!
