Tyler James Williams Is The Only Person Not Shipping Greg And Janine On ‘Abbott Elementary’
Tyler James Williams is breaking all of our hearts.
During his Tuesday (April 9) appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, the Golden Globe winner confessed that he “doesn’t necessarily want” to see his and Quinta Brunson’s characters on Abbott Elementary become romantically involved.
“I hate to say it […] It’s partially an actor’s choice. I read a lot of scripts all the time. I watch a lot of TV, a lot of film; I don’t think that we see displays of platonic love between two people often,” Williams explained.
He continued, “I think it’s really easy to go right to ‘They have feelings for each other; therefore, they should be together.’ I like this dynamic of them exploring withholding that and just actively loving each other where they are. That, I’d like to see more.”
The audience, as well as Hudson, seemed to understand his sentiments. The EGOT winner even quipped, “That’ll bring something different to the table.”
Williams added, “It’s time for that. I think TV allows for people to see things that could be their lives for the first time and I think seeing a healthy friendship that’s deeply caring about one another in a work atmosphere needs to be shown more than a relationship.”
His onscreen character, Gregory Eddie’s relationship—both platonic and romantic—with Brunson’s character, Janine Teagues, is one of the sitcom’s most beloved storylines.
Sparks flew during their slow-burn romance before they finally shared a kiss during the 16th episode of season two. However, by the end of the season, Gregory and Janine opted to remain just friends—much to the dismay of fans. When they returned for season three, Janine professed her feelings, but Gregory felt the time for them to explore a relationship had passed. Once again, it’s unclear how their relationship will progress.
Abbott Elementary returns this Wednesday, April 10 on ABC and has been renewed for a fourth season.
