Tyrese Gibson Revisits ‘1992’ Los Angeles At Red Carpet Premiere

Tyrese Gibson goes back in time in his upcoming film 1992. Set at the height of the Los Angeles riots sparked after the infamous Rodney King verdict, the movie also stars Ray Liotta, Scott Eastwood, Christopher A’mmanuel, Clé Bennett, Ori Piefer, Oleg Taktarov, Dylan Arnold, Michael Beasley, and more. On Tuesday night (Aug. 27), the cast and crew gathered for the Los Angeles red carpet premiere of their work, also to pay homage to Liotta who suddenly passed away in 2022 ahead of the film’s release. 1992 is Liotta’s final big-screen film.

Directed by Ariel Vromen with a story by Sascha Penn, 1992 follows Mercer (Tyrese Gibson), a man whose life collides with a father and son (Ray Liotta and Scott Eastwood) who are plotting a dangerous heist at the factory he works in as he desperately tries to protect his son (Christopher A’mmanuel) during the aforementioned riots. Snoop Dogg executive produced the offering with Tita and Gibson.

“It’s about to be a real monumental moment for the West,” explained Gibson to VIBE earlier this year. “This is a real movie that’s based out of the West, historically from the West. When the Rodney King verdict came in they let all them police officers off and said, ‘Not guilty,’ we burned the city down. And in the midst of that, there was a heist that took place.”

Adding more, the 45-year-old detailed to The Hollywood Reporter:

“I just feel very humbled and grateful and blessed. It doesn’t matter where we were on the call sheet, everybody rocked in this movie. If you know anything about South Central, you will know that the first movie ever was Colors with Don Cheadle and Sean Penn. Then you get into Menace II Society with the Hughes brothers [Allen and Albert Hughes]. Then you got Boyz n the Hood, Baby Boy, Poetic Justice, Straight Outta Compton, Snowfall. There has never been a cast more diverse than 1992. Whenever you see white people in South Central films, they’re always evil or racist police officers f**king us up. Everything about this heist and the conflict between the brothers and the father — I’ve got my son and I’m the father — and it’s all happening at this place where my character works, I was like, my God, this movie has to be made. It has to be made about this dark historical moment.”
