Victoria Monét Gave The 2024 BET Awards A Main Character Medley
There’s a reason why we said this year belongs to Victoria Monét.
Following an epic snub on MTV’s part, where they said it was “too early” in her career to perform at the VMAs, BET took the opportunity to right that wrong and named the three-time Grammy winner as one of this year’s performers.
Hailing from the school of Janet and Michael Jackson and Beyoncé, the singer opened her show with her hit record, “On My Mama.” Her dancers set the scene with moves that felt like you were watching a HBCU homecoming before Monét and her live vocals took over. Stemming from its music video, she and her crew rocked oversized white tees, baggy jeans, and varsity jackets and even performed the infamous, one-take switch from the visual live.
When the music cut out, the JAGUAR II singer then walked over to a glass case which housed a white tuxedo jacket, similar to the King of Pop’s infamous look from “Smooth Criminal,” and brought Kaytranada for the television debut of their vibrant anthem, “Alright.”
She floated, glided, and vogued across the stage for the record’s first verse and chorus before changing for a third time.
Fans were shook, but when you’re the main character and this is your moment, this is what you do with it.
She closed out the medley with the closing scene from the “Alright” music video, where she danced in the rain in a shimmering bikini. If anyone doubted her being a triple threat as a singer-dancer-performer, this production should eliminate all unnecessary chatter.
Coco Jones was actually the person who encapsulated everyone’s reaction perfectly.
