VMA Fashion 2024: Which Celebs Paid Tribute to the 2000s?

It’s no secret that celebs love to recreate looks from award shows past — remember when Blake Lively sported Britney Spears’ 2002 Versace gown for the It Ends with Us premiere or when Kim Kardashian controversially wore Marilyn Monroe’s dress? Well, MTV’s Video Music Awards, or VMAs, were no different with plenty of celebs sporting tributes to iconic pop star looks of years gone by. Read on for who wore what.

Sabrina Carpenter serving Queen of Pop

Sabrina Carpenter, who has been making headlines with the release of her #1 album, Short n’ Sweet, paid homage to Madonna by wearing her 1991 look from the Academy Awards. Funnily enough, when Madonna wore the gown 33 years ago, she was doing so as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe.

The gown was designed by Bob Mackie and given to Madonna for a Vanity Fair cover shoot, but the singer soon asked for a version just for her. Mackie recalled on an Instagram post, “Maria Schiavo, a well-known fashion stylist, borrowed my sample of this dress for a Madonna cover shoot for Vanity Fair. Less than a week later, Madonna herself called and requested her own version of the dress for the 1991 Academy Awards.”

The fashion designer, who is known for dressing icons including Cher, Whitney Houston and Marilyn Monroe, explained in his post that the gown is “vintage 90s Bob Mackie white satin sequin and beaded bias strapless evening gown, with pearl and crystal embellishments.” Not only did Madonna wear the gown in the cover shoot and at the Academy Awards, but she also brought the look back for her 1992 book, Sex.

More nostalgic looks from the 2024 VMAs

But Carpenter wasn’t the only star to recreate an iconic look at last night’s awards. Halsey, Megan Thee Stallion and Paris Hilton had their own nostalgic looks ready to go for the cameras.

Singer and songwriter, Halsey, channeled her inner Elizabeth Hurley by rocking the actress’ gown from the 1996 grand opening of a Versace boutique. Halsey explained that the “dress was literally a miracle to find. This dress was designed by Gianni Versace for Elizabeth Hurley in 1996, and it hasn’t been worn since. So, from 1996 to me right now, and I’m just living it up. I’m loving it,” Halsey said in a pre-show interview. The dress in question was a red fitted, sleeveless gown with a black leopard print pattern and sparkly accents.

In typical Paris Hilton fashion, she channeled her own nostalgic look, recreating a version of her iconic 21st birthday dress which is still one of the most memorable looks.

It seemed that everyone wanted to channel their inner Britney Spears last night. Singer Tate McRae wore a look that was closely inspired by something Spears wore in 2001. McRae was wearing a black, high neck, sheer lace mini dress by Robert Cavalli.

I mean, Britney’s the queen,” McRae explained. “People are going to compare newer artists to things that have happened in the past, so obviously it's very cool to hear comments like that.”

But rapper Megan Thee Stallion’s look might have taken the cake as she brought back Britney Spears’ gorgeous (but frightening) 2001 VMAs appearance. If you’ll recall, Spears performed her song, “I’m a Slave 4 U” in a green bustier top, micro jean shorts a blue skirt and a python. Yes, a real python. And no, Stallion didn’t hold back.

The VMAs presenter had a real python wrapped around herself to pay homage to Spears, but only lasted a few seconds before she freaked out. (To be honest, we’d be freaked out too!)
