VMA reactions: Did Taylor Swift really deserve to win NINE times? [POLL]
Taylor Swift had 11 nominations at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, and she won a whopping nine of them including Video of the Year and Song of the Year for “Anti-Hero” and Artist of the Year for her body of work. That’s impressive no matter how you slice it, but was it really warranted? After all, that’s more VMAs in one night than anyone has achieved since Peter Gabriel won nine for “Sledgehammer” back in the ’80s. “This is a joke,” says forum poster joesilver. “Taylor Swift winning nine awards and most of them for ‘Anti-Hero’ doesn’t feel the same as [Lady Gaga] winning for ‘Bad Romance’ or Beyoncé winning for ‘Formation.'” Another user, sorcerer99, adds, “[Miley Cyrus‘s] ‘Flowers’ and [SZA‘s] ‘Kill Bill’ deserved big awards. This was so boring.”

JPCAMP310 goes even farther: “They should’ve renamed this ‘The Taylor Swift Awards’ because that’s all it was. Save for Song of the Summer and Editing, everyone that won only won because she wasn’t nominated. MTV needs to either make the show not fan-voted again or cancel the show altogether.” Kaylie says, “I do really like Taylor and this song, but winning Video of the Year is so insufferable.”
Swift has now won Video of the Year four times (for “Bad Blood,” “You Need to Calm Down,” “All Too Well” and “Anti-Hero”). That’s more than any other artist. She has also won Best Direction three times, tying her with filmmakers Spike Jonze and David Fincher for the most victories ever in that category. And the Best Direction award wasn’t even fan-voted like most of her other victories, so you can’t chalk that one up to the power of Swifties. What did you think of her historic haul?
