Coming off the release of her sophomore album Guts, VMA nominee Olivia Rodrigo hit the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards stage to perform two songs off the new record.
As the second performer of the night, Rodrigo opened her set with the first Guts single, “Vampire,” a track that’s nominated for video of the year, song of the year, best pop, song of the summer, best cinematography and best editing. The hit song is Rodrigo’s third single to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1.

Surrounded by a forest scene of lush greenery and rolling fog, Rodrigo belted out the lyrics to the breakup ballad “Vampire.” As she moved on to the more upbeat second half of the song, firework explosions went off on the stage. The singer was ushered off stage as the forest scene appeared to fall apart. She then returned, along with several backup dancers, to perform the rock tune of “Get Him Back!”
Previously, the 20-year old singer-songwriter made her debut on the VMAs stage in 2021, performing “good 4 u” off her first album Sour. That night, the Gen-Z phenomenon won three awards — best new arts, song of the year (“Drivers License”) and Push performance of the year.
