'Voice' set exclusive: Kelly Clarkson says new album is 'the reason I became a singer'
Next week, Kelly Clarkson, who’s set to join the Voice cast full-time next season, will stop by the Voice set to serve as Season 13’s key adviser during the Knockout Rounds. It’s going to feel a little weird, and maybe even just plain wrong, to see the original American Idol sitting in one of those big red chairs (frankly, many viewers are still getting used to seeing ex-Idol Jennifer Hudson on The Voice). But considering how awesome Clarkson was as a guest judge on what was supposed to be the final American Idol season last year, it will be interesting to see what she can bring to the Voice table … or, um, to the Voice chair.
This is an exciting time in Clarkson’s life. Along with her new television gig, she’s releasing her eighth studio album, Meaning of Life, this week on her new label, Atlantic Records. Fifteen years after she first entered America’s living rooms and won America’s hearts on a rival TV show, her career is going stronger than ever. To celebrate, Yahoo Entertainment’s Reality Rocks offers this exclusive clip of Clarkson discussing her new album and its dynamite lead single, “Love So Soft,” while hanging out on the Voice set.
“Literally from the first [drumbeat], I freaked out. I was so excited, because it was so sassy and fun and it’s so my personality,” Clarkson says of the soulful banger “Love So Soft,” which was co-penned by MoZella (Miley Cyrus, One Direction, Charlie Puth), pop singer Priscilla Renea (who has written for Demi Lovato, Rihanna, and Madonna), and Jesse Shatkin (Sia, Fitz and the Tantrums, Kylie Minogue), and even features a session appearance by Earth, Wind & Fire. “I’m a woman of many different colors to my personality, and it expresses all of that.”

As for the rest of Meaning of Life, Clarkson says, “Whatever song you hear on the record, it’s very intimate. I think at this point in my career, I deserve to make this record that’s like the reason I became a singer. I’m so proud of it. I literally have not worked any harder on anything else in my life.”
Kelly Clarkson appears on NBC’s The Voice this coming Monday and Tuesday.
