Watch Brooklyn Square's owners make signature pie Friday on 'Good Morning America'

Friday is National Pizza Day, and Peter Grippo of Brooklyn Square Pizza is celebrating in a big way.

He and his family are heading to New York City for an appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America," where they will make their signature pizza — the upside down Brooklyn Square — on air.

The pie, a Sicilian-style pizza made from Grippo's family's recipe, is available at the restaurant's locations in Jackson, Toms River and Manalapan.

"I put the cheese on the bottom, the sauce on the top, then extra-virgin olive oil, then I finish it with a layer of Pecorino Romano," Grippo described in 2018. "By putting the cheese first, the cheese cooks into the dough. When you bite it, you get a combination of flavors, and it's like a pillow.

In 2020, pizza reviewer Dave Portnoy awarded the pizza a top score of 8.9 out of 10 and said it was the best square slice he'd reviewed. In 2022, Reader's Digest included the pizzeria in its "Best Pizza in Every State" list.

"I’m old school," Grippo said. "I haven’t touched the recipe in 25 years. My recipes, they're nothing new. My pizza reminds people of their youth, of good times, and that’s awesome."

"Good Morning America" reached out to Grippo for the television segment, which he expects will air around 8:30 a.m. It will feature "a friendly competition" between Brooklyn Square and two pizzerias from New York and Connecticut, he said.

"The winner gets bragging rights, but I'm just happy to be involved," he said. "I'm so blessed — blessed to be alive, to have a great business with unbelievable customers."
