WATCH: Marvel lights up San Diego Comic-Con for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — As San Diego Comic-Con wound down for the day on Thursday, Marvel Studios lit up the downtown sky with a dazzling drone and fireworks show to celebrate the premiere of its latest film, “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
The drones, which were launched across the street from the Convention Center in Petco Park, formed nearly a dozen shapes in the nighttime sky — from the Marvel Studios and “Deadpool & Wolverine” logos to images of Deadpool and Wolverine as they hugged and fought.
The spectacle concluded with a burning “Fantastic Four” logo in an apparent tease for the upcoming Marvel film centered around the quartet. It is set to star Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm.
A video of full drone show captured from San Diego’s Hilton Bayfront camera can be viewed in the player above.
The show capped the convention’s first day where “Deadpool” dominated as the only superhero film debuting this summer. Scores of fans were seen throughout the day in “Deadpool” merchandise while others wore costumes of the film’s main cast of characters.
The day culminated with an epic Hall H program all about “Deadpool,” featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who portray the titular superheroes, alongside director Sean Levy and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
The lucky 6,000 fans who made it inside the storied hall — the Convention Center’s biggest venue — were treated to a special screening of the film. During the panel, Reynolds joked it was the “worst kept secret on Earth,” as fans had been speculating that they would show the full film since the panel was announced.
Following the screening, the crew who worked on the film joined its starring cast on the stage, as well as a few of the actors who make special appearances in the movie.

“If there’s still any question about the importance of experiencing something with a crowd, that just changed everything. That was astounding — the best movie experience of my life, so thank you,” Feige said to the Hall H audience after the film.
Since premiering on Thursday, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has already snared nearly $50 million at the box office as of Friday, putting it on track to bring in a record $180 million during its opening weekend as Deadline reported.
The film marks the debut of both Reynolds and Jackman’s characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The two were previously featured in Marvel films produced under the banner of 21st Century Fox, which Disney acquired in 2019 for $71.3 billion.
