What to watch this weekend August 30, 2024: TV awards contenders

“Only Murders in the Building” is going Hollywood, baby. 

The fourth season of Hulu’s Emmy-winning comedy finds our favorite trio of amateur detectives-slash-podcast producers (Emmy nominees Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) briefly trade the streets of New York for the sunny skies of Los Angeles in light of the news their podcast is being turned into a movie starring Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria. But the buzz of excitement doesn’t last long, as Sazz’s (Jane Lynch) disappearance has Charles increasingly worried. It’s not until the gang leaves the glitz and glamour behind to check her apartment for clues that the pieces begin to fall into place, leading Charles, Oliver and Mabel down a familiar path yet again.

In the new season, the acclaimed comedy series remains as funny as it’s ever been, with enough Hollywood jokes and references to almost make “Hacks” nervous. Combined with some serious star power, “Only Murders in the Building” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, there are plenty more options, too. Other contenders include:

  • “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”: The sophomore outing of Amazon’s fantasy series based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien took longer to produce than Frodo’s ambling journey to Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring. But all is forgiven now that we’re back in the familiar world of Middle-earth (even if it’s in dire straits). In the new episodes, the war against Sauron (Charlie Vickers) is now underway, leading to some unlikely alliances and even more tests of friendship. Fans of Tolkien will also be excited to know this season promises to feature the long-awaited Siege of Eregion. The first three episodes are now streaming on Prime Video.

  • “After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun”: This new four-part docuseries from ABC News Studios captures a specific moment in pop culture history through the eyes of those who lived it, for better or worse. Featuring new interviews and never-before-seen footage from many of the men and women who embodied the show’s famous lifeguards, the series is an all-access pass to one of the most iconic shows in TV history. All four episodes are now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.

  • “Terminator Zero”: Emmy nominee Timothy Olyphant leads the voice cast of this anime set within the world of the popular “Terminator” franchise. Featuring all new characters, the series follows a soldier (Sonoya Mizuno) sent back in time to 1997 to protect a scientist (André Holland) working on Kokoro (Rosario Dawson), Japan’s advanced artificial intelligence system that is meant to be a rival to Skynet, and prevent him from launching it. Olyphant portrays the Terminator, while Ann Dowd (Ann freaking Dowd!) is the Prophet, who is a guide for the human resistance. All eight episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
