What to watch this weekend Feb. 21, 2025: TV awards contenders
Don’t sleep on this one.
Following the men’s basketball teams from the U.S., France, Serbia, and Canada as they attempt to win gold at the Paris Olympics, Netflix’s new six-part docuseries Court of Gold (now streaming) comes from executive producer President Barack Obama and offers fans courtside seats to the sport’s next chapter, as America’s historical dominance has given way as the rest of the world has closed the talent gap. With unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to some of the biggest names in basketball today, including Steph Curry, Victor Wembanyama, Steve Kerr, and Kevin Durant, and interviews with former players like Steve Nash, Dwyane Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker, and Carmelo Anthony, the series is unlike any other. A fascinating insider’s take on the global state of basketball and Team USA’s place at the top of the mountain, Court of Gold is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, if you’re not a baller (or you’re simply in the mood for something scripted), other contenders include:
Reacher: Amazon’s action slate continues to punch above its weight with the thrilling third season of Prime Video’s Reacher. Starring a beefy Alan Ritchson as the titular former military policeman and based on Lee Child‘s novel Persuader, the new episodes find Reacher going undercover as a bodyguard to the scion of a criminal enterprise in order to find a missing informant for the DEA. Naturally, this puts him in the crosshairs of some very wealthy and very powerful men. Since each season is vastly different in terms of story and setting, the Season 3 cast is also new; this time, Ritchson and Maria Sten are joined by Anthony Michael Hall, Sonya Cassidy, Brian Tee, Olivier Richters, Johnny Berchtold, and Roberto Montesinos. The first three episodes are now streaming on Prime Video.
Best Interests: Emmy nominees Sharon Horgan and Michael Sheen lead this deeply emotional, BAFTA-nominated limited series about parents fighting for medical care for their child, who has a rare type of muscular dystrophy. The four-part series from writer Jack Thorne aired overseas in summer 2023 but is now making its U.S. debut, and while it’s not an easy watch by any means, it’s tremendously well done. The entire series is now streaming on Acorn TV.
1923: Naming shows after years or numbers is kind of goofy, but who are we to tell Oscar nominee Taylor Sheridan what to do? The second of two Yellowstone prequels, 1923 returns for its sophomore season this weekend, with stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren reprising their roles as Jacob and Cara Dutton, the patriarch and matriarch of the Dutton family whose ranch is under threat when the show returns. The Season 2 premiere streams Sunday on Paramount+.
