What to watch this weekend Jan. 17, 2025: TV awards contenders
It’s time to get reacquainted with your innie.
It’s been nearly three years since Apple TV+ introduced fans to Lumon Industries, the mysterious tech company at the heart of Severance, the vibe-heavy, Emmy-winning sci-fi thriller about employees who’ve had their consciousness split in two: the innie version who exists only at work and the outie who lives an otherwise normal life outside its walls. If you don’t remember where we left off, here’s a handy refresher now that the Season 2 premiere is streaming. But it’s safe to say it was worth the wait.

The new episodes pick up in the aftermath of the shocking revelation that Helly (Britt Lower), the innie who joined Mark’s (Adam Scott) “macrodata refinement” team and spent the entire first season trying to escape Lumon’s clutches, is actually the daughter of the company’s CEO who willingly underwent the procedure of the series’ title in the name of growing the practice. Meanwhile, Mark’s team activated the “overtime contingency” protocol, allowing innies to wake up in the outside world, leading to some startling discoveries. While the new season may have taken longer to arrive than anyone would have liked, the sleek and stylish drama has only gotten better in its sophomore outing now that it’s properly able to propel the story forward, making Severance the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, if you’re looking for something a little less heavy and/or thought-provoking, other contenders include:
Castlevania: Nocturne: Also returning for its second go-round this week is this Netflix animated series set within the world of Castlevania. In the eight episodes that make up the new season, Richter Belmont (Edward Bluemel) and his fellow vampire hunters have finally been joined by the charismatic Alucard, the son of Dracula (James Callis, reprising his role from the original series), and must find a way to stop Erzsebet from plunging the world into darkness. Should be fun! All eight episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
St. Denis Medical: NBC’s well-received freshman comedy set at an understaffed hospital returned with brand new episodes this week (and a renewal for a second season too). Filmed mockumentary style, the series is a breath of fresh air at a time when many of us need it most. This week’s episode, titled “50 CC’s of Kindness,” is now streaming on Peacock.
SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night: Executive-produced by Oscar and Emmy Award winner Morgan Neville, this four-part documentary series offers a behind-the-scenes look at one of America’s pop culture institutions as it turns 50. Each episode is helmed by a different director (Robert Alexander, Marshall Curry, Neil Berkeley, and Jason Zeldes) and features never-before-seen footage and input from numerous contributors, including some of the sketch show’s biggest stars. The full docuseries is now streaming on Peacock.
