What to watch this weekend Jan. 24, 2025: TV awards contenders
Pack your bags, we’re going to Asia.
The BBC Studios Natural History Unit has produced some of the best and most breathtaking nature documentary series of the last 25 years, including the Emmy Award-winning Planet Earth franchise. Now it’s turning its focus to Earth’s largest continent, exploring everything from the bitter tundra of Siberia to the murky depths of the numerous oceans and seas that surround the landmass. The rich ecosystems of the latter are featured in the series premiere, “Beneath the Waves” (airing Saturday at 8/7c on BBC America and streaming on AMC+), which takes viewers on a marine adventure as it highlights unique wildlife like the firefly squid, which glows in the dark and lives for just 12 months, and the once vulnerable northern fur seal, which is now thriving on an old hunting settlement.

However, if you’re looking for something scripted, other contenders include:
The Night Agent: Netflix’s action-packed conspiracy thriller about a low-level FBI agent working the phone of a top-secret program returns for round two this week. In the new season, Gabriel Basso‘s Peter Sutherland is now an actual night agent after being thrust into action and saving the president in Season 1. The new episodes successfully build upon those life-changing events by introducing yet another multi-level conspiracy, while also delivering on the growing emotional bond between Peter and Rose (Luciane Buchanan), the tech entrepreneur whose distressed call in the series’ pilot set everything in motion. All 10 episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
The Pitt: Star Noah Wyle pulls double duty this week as the writer of the near real-time medical drama’s fourth episode. The hour picks up in the aftermath of an ambulance being stolen from the hospital (a humorous subplot that plays out over the course of several episodes) and introduces viewers to a few new patients, including a transgender woman and a pregnant teen. The episode is now streaming on Max.
Harlem: Last but not least, you don’t want to miss the third and final season of Amazon’s beloved series about four girlfriends living in the titular neighborhood of the series’ title. Logan Browning, Kofi Siriboe, Robin Givens, and Gail Bean join the series for its swan song, which finds the girls growing and evolving as they reach the next stage of their lives. The first two episodes are now streaming on Prime Video.
