What to watch this weekend July 12, 2024: Movie awards contenders
Our top pick for an awards contender to stream this week, crime drama “The Bikeriders,” has some names attached to it that have been in the conversation in awards seasons past. It stars Emmy and Tony winner Jodie Comer and Academy Award nominees Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, and Michael Shannon. Moreover, it’s written and directed by Jeff Nichols, whose previous film, 2016’s “Loving,” earned Ruth Negga an Academy Award nomination. While “The Bikeriders” looks more likely than not to miss out on major awards this year, don’t count Comer out yet in lead actress races. She is excellent in the film.
“The Bikeriders” is set in the midwest in the tumultuous years of the mid-to-late 1960s, and follows the rise and fall of Johnny Davis (Hardy), the founder of an outlaw motorcycle club, as seen through the eyes of his protegé’s wife, Kathy Cross (Comer). The club’s members are becoming increasingly violent and involved in serious crime, and Johnny is trying to keep a handle on things before they spin completely out of control. The movie is now available to rent or buy on the video-on-demand service of your choice.

Here are some other movies to stream this weekend:
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”: This box-office hit is now available on VOD. The fourth film in the “Planet of the Apes” reboot series follows Noa (Owen Teague), a chimpanzee, and Nova (Freya Allan), a human, who come to rely on each other as they work to achieve their respective goals on behalf of their communities and learn that maybe humans and apes can coexist after all. The previous three “Planet of the Apes” movies earned Best Visual Effects nominations, and “Kingdom” may very well continue the streak.
“Faye”: This HBO documentary chronicles the life and career of Academy Award-winning screen icon Faye Dunaway, star of “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Chinatown,” and “Network.” In the documentary, which premiered at Cannes, the now 83-year-old actress looks back at her difficult childhood, the ups and downs of her career, and her complicated reputation as an extraordinarily gifted artist who refuses to compromise her vision even if it puts her in conflict with her collaborators. The documentary will be available to stream on Max on Saturday, July 13 at 8 p.m. ET.
“IF”: Kids like this John Krasinski-directed family comedy about imaginary friends. Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming (“The Walking Dead”) play humans who are trying to help imaginary friends whose children have outgrown them either find new children or reunite with their now grown-up original kids. The all-star voice cast includes Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Emily Blunt, George Clooney, and Jon Stewart, among many, many others. Not necessarily an awards magnet, but the crafts — including a score by Michael Giacchino and cinematography by Janusz Kaminski — could land some recognition. It’s now streaming on Paramount+.
