Watermark Art Center to display 'Ninanda-minwaajim' exhibit
Aug. 31—BEMIDJI — Watermark Art Center is set to display Joyce Jackson Arndt's exhibit, "Ninanda-minwaajim — I seek to tell a good story," starting Saturday, Sept. 9, in Watermark's Miikanan Gallery.
"The exhibit is a retrospective and contains many of her favorite pieces representative of her past," a release said. "Arndt was cut off from her cultural identity during much of her childhood. As a toddler, she was placed in foster care and became homeless as a young woman. Knowing that her identity as a Native American was portrayed negatively because of stereotypes and racism, she began to use art as a way to portray her people in a positive light."
Arndt likes to work with watercolor, oils and acrylic, the release said. Her mural work has been featured in Wadena and Detroit Lakes, Minn.
A reception for Arndt will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15. The exhibit will be on display through Nov. 11.
Watermark galleries are free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
