Weeds Creator Calls Long-Gestating Sequel a ‘Money Grab,’ Says Subject Matter ‘Is Not as Relevant Anymore’
Weeds creator Jenji Kohan is here to harsh your sequel series buzz.
Speaking at the Seriesly Berlin TV conference in Germany, the Emmy Award-winning scribe sounded less than enthusiastic about Paramount+ With Showtime’s long-gestating follow-up to the pot dramedy. Now that weed has been legalized in nearly 40 states, “I don’t really know if there’s more story to tell,” she said, according to Deadline. “I think Weeds was done, and I think it’d be a money grab.

“They can do what they want, but this wouldn’t be associated with the team that made [the original series],” the EP pointed out, “and I think there are many other stories to be told. I think Weeds was of its time and it’s not as relevant anymore.”
The Weeds sequel was first put into development in 2019, when it was set up at Starz with Mary-Louise Parker attached as star and executive producer. Four years later, Deadline reported that the potential revival was still in development, only now at Showtime, on which all eight seasons of the OG series aired between 2005 and 2012. (TVLine has reached out to Showtime for comment on where the revival stands now.)
In addition to Parker, who played Nancy Botwin, the original Weeds starred Elizabeth Perkins, Justin Kirk, Tonye Patano, Romany Malco, Hunter Parrish, Alexander Gould, Andy Milder, Allie Grant and Kevin Nealon. While Perkins has said that she’d be “on board” if approached to reprise Celia Hodes, Kirk, who played Nancy’s brother-in-law Andy, seemed less bullish on Weeds 2.0.
“Even as a fan, do you really want to see us all old and coming back? I did recently hear of [the Showtime revival], so they may be trying to drag its tired carcass out,” he quipped in May 2023.
