Whale City Comedy Festival will feature special event aboard Fall River battleship

This week, we’ve got a look at the Whale City Comedy Festival, with events in the New Bedford and Fall River areas, including a special showcase aboard the USS Massachusetts at Battleship Cove. Plus, a special hike for you and your dog, and the chance to apply for an artist residency.

Whale City Comedy Festival will include special event on the USS Massachusetts

There’s a stand-up comedy festival coming to the SouthCoast.

The Whale City Comedy Festival is being held from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1, with events spanning the New Bedford and Fall River areas.

Throughout Labor Day weekend, there will be nine stand-up showcases, featuring more than 30 comedians, including performers from Comedy Central, Conan, and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

The schedule includes:

• Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m.: A kickoff with The Portuguese Kids, featuring Zach Braz?o, at The Vault Music Hall & Pub, 791 Purchase St., New Bedford.

• Thursday, Aug. 29, at 6 and 8 p.m.: Sip delicious brews while enjoying great views with Kelly MacFarland (Comedy Central, HBO), at Buzzards Bay Brewing, 98 Horseneck Rd., Westport.

• Friday, Aug. 30, at 7 and 9 p.m.: Chris Alan (Fox, Sirius XM) takes the stage for back-to-back BYOB shows at Gallery X, 169 William St., New Bedford.

• Saturday, Aug. 31, at 6:15 and 9 p.m.: Battleship Comedy will be a special event held aboard “Big Mamie” herself, the USS Massachusetts, at Battleship Cove in Fall River.. Enjoy a showcase of talent from the New York City and Los Angeles comedy scenes, followed by an after party at Society Coffee Bar, 891 County St., Somerset.

• Sunday, Sept. 1, at 7 and 9 p.m.: The Whale City Comedy Festival comes to an end, with Sean Patton (Comedy Central, Jimmy Fallon, Hulu, Netflix) performing at The Vault in New Bedford. There will be a wrap party at the New Bedford Harbor Hotel, 222 Union St.

Throughout the festival, scheduled performances include the above acts, plus Ray Harrington, Oscar Aydin, Laura Severse, Doug Key, Jack Finnegan, Allyson Vastano, Sarah Suzuki Harvard, Jilberto Soto, and more.

All shows are general admission.

Tickets are $30, and tickets for the battleship comedy event are $50. Presented by Society Coffee Bar.

Trail Explorers: Dog Days of Summer in Westport

Bring your furry best friends and hit the trail at Noquochoke Conservation Area, 421 Pine Hill Rd., Westport.

On Thursday, Aug. 29, you and your pup can enjoy a leisurely stroll, from 10 to 11 a.m.

All dogs must be leashed; no flexi-leads.

As always, be prepared to clean up after your dog.

This is a free event, but there are a limited number of spots.

Apply to be an Artist in Residence at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park

There’s still time to apply for the Artist-in-Residence Program at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.

New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, in collaboration with New Bedford Creative at the New Bedford Economic Development Council, as well as the UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts, is currently accepting applications for the program, now in its eighth year.

Aiming to foster creative exploration and community engagement through the arts, the park has hosted poets, painters, social practice artists, performance artists, writers, collage artists, photographers, textile artists, printmakers, sound artists, musicians, comic illustrators, and marine debris artists.

This program offers artists the opportunity to work within the park for three months, drawing inspiration from New Bedford’s cultural heritage.

The park has three offerings: a $2,500 stipend, studio space, a $250 stipend for supplies, and professional development opportunities.

Artists from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The application period ends on Friday, Aug. 30.

All interested artists must apply through anyartist.org by the closing in order to be considered.

Applying to the residency is free to all artists.
