Where in Indianapolis to watch the 2023 Kentucky Derby
It's May, which in Indianapolis means the Indy 500. But there's another much shorter race that catches the attention of Hoosiers this time of year as well.
The 2023 running of the Kentucky Derby takes place Saturday at the legendary Churchill Downs. Post time for the 'greatest two minutes in sports" is set for 6:57 p.m. EDT.
If you aren't one of the lucky few with a road trip in your plans to see the race live, here are some spots to enjoy the race locally.
Indianapolis Kentucky Derby Watch Parties
The Pure In Heart Center
The Indianapolis Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi is throwing a 'Big Hats & Bowties Extravaganza on Derby Day.'
Hosted at the Pure In Heart community center, two big screens will be airing the race, along with a cash bar, food truck and post-race party featuring DJ Duck.
Derby Attire is recommended, and the newest members of the fraternity will be inducted at 10:11 p.m., according to the event page.

Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library
A library might not be your first thought for a party, but this 21+ event will feature a fancy hat contest and post-race concert by Sarah Grain and the Billions of Stars.
A family-friendly event will run until race time, and include educational booths, hatmaking and a food truck.
Down and Derby Party
For mint juleps, Derby-inspired trivia and live music with Brian Koening, check out the annual party hosted by McDonald Floral and Gifts.
They start the party at 2, with trivia at 5, all things race around 6 and live music at 7.

Horseshoe Indianapolis
If you'd like to mix a little wagering into your Derby Day, head south a bit to Shelbyville and check out the Horseshoe Casino's Derby Day.
You'll need reservations for the day of buffets, live racing and swag, but there will also be free areas to enjoy the festivities for those who arrive early.
